Picante!

28-02-2007

2007 welcomes the hottest chili pepper in the world: from India, the Bhut Jolokia (A.K.A. Naga Jolokia). It took quite some controversy to certify the claims, but now it is definite. Up to now, the hottest chili was the Red Savina (Habanero) pepper. And the new record is really outstanding: the Bhut Jolokia is more than two times spicier than the Habanero (and the Habanero was already fainful). In fact if somebody wonders: Why growing such a hot pepper? Hummm... If military are interested in it, it may not be grown for eat...

Besides, I am finding confirmation that all peppers are originating from America (even the Indian varieties, that were brought there by Portuguese). I never trusted so much the people who said that there were some kind of chilies originating from India. They looked too similar to me.

A lot of this information (and more) from very amusing videos by Terra: Picante (Part One) (The best one of all: you will learn about capsaicin, that just hurts mammals - and bacteria as well, that it is called 'hot' because our body feels it like temperature, and that green peppers are high in vitamin C, while red peppers are high in vitamin A). Picante (Part Two) (Much less interesting, talking about medical uses of peppers and then a lot about pepper spray). Picante (Part Three) (The less interesting of all: too much about pepper spray and a sumary of the previous two videos).
