Last.fm: running out of time

14-06-2005

I am delighted with Last.fm: it is an internet radio with good sound quality (MP3 128kps), a simple interface, no banners, no ads, the ability to skip songs (greeeeat!!)... And besides, the playlist is created to fit to my music taste. I mean, they try the playlist to be similar to my music taste. By using the brother service Audioscrobbler, they record the music I listen to, and then they search for other people with similar tastes, and by mixing up all this data they obtain music I would like to listen because people that shares my tastes listens to them. The procedure is probably error prone, as all statistics, but it is interesting. So far, I have found that what last.fm suggests me it is not bad at all.

Another service is called personal radio. With this service they just let you listen to songs you usually listen to. I was surprised when I discovered the guys at last.fm have many of the records I own, and they let me listen to them. Interesting if I feel to travel around without my CDs: I can listen to my music without having my music with me. Isn't this cool? This service is not for free (but not expensive either, there is no minimun fee for it). You will have 30 days to test it free of charge. The only issue I have found out, is that the 30 days run out even if you are not listening to the music. I have been without connecting to the radio for a week, and 7 days are gone.

I do prefer the other service where I can listen to new music. I already have listened too often the songs on my personal radio, I can live without it for a while. Still, I am thinking about opening a Paypal account for donating some money (although I am quite suspicious on Paypal).
